How to Create a Morning Routine You’ll Actually Stick To
There is no shortage of advice about how to create the “perfect” morning routine.
Wake up earlier.
Journal.
Meditate.
Work out.
Read.
Drink water.
Make breakfast.
Plan your day.
And somehow do all of this before the rest of the world wakes up.
For some people, that works.
For the rest of us, a morning routine can start feeling like another list of things we are failing to complete before 8 a.m.
A good morning routine should not make your morning more complicated.
It should make it feel better.
And if you are an entrepreneur, professional, parent, caregiver, or simply someone whose brain starts running before your feet hit the floor, the best morning routine is probably not the most impressive one.
It is the one you can actually repeat.
Start Smaller Than You Think
You do not need an hour.
You may not even need 30 minutes.
Start with 10.
Ten minutes is enough time to make your coffee, sit down, and give yourself a little space before the day starts asking things from you.
That is the philosophy behind Me Time Coffee.
We are not trying to completely redesign your morning.
We are helping you make more of something you are probably already doing anyway.
Drinking coffee.
Instead of grabbing your mug and immediately opening your inbox, what happens if you sit with it for a few minutes first?
No complicated routine.
No checklist.
Just a small moment that belongs to you.
Build Your Routine Around Something You Already Do
One of the easiest ways to make a routine stick is to attach it to something that is already part of your day.
If you already make coffee every morning, let that be your anchor.
While the coffee brews, you might:
- open the blinds
- light a candle
- stretch for a few minutes
- sit somewhere quiet
- look at your priorities for the day
- do absolutely nothing
The point is not to add more productivity to your morning.
The point is to create a recognizable moment that signals:
My day is beginning, and I get to arrive in it before everybody else does.
Stop Trying to Make Every Morning Look the Same
This is where a lot of routines fall apart.
We create a routine for our ideal morning, then get frustrated when real life does not cooperate.
Some mornings you have 20 minutes.
Some mornings you have seven.
Some mornings somebody needs you before the coffee even finishes brewing.
That does not mean the routine failed.
The ritual can stay even when the amount of time changes.
Maybe one morning you sit with your coffee for 15 minutes.
Another morning, you take three intentional sips before heading out the door.
Consistency does not always mean doing something exactly the same way every day.
Sometimes it simply means returning to the same intention.
Make Your Coffee Worth Sitting Down For
If coffee is going to be part of your morning ritual, it should be coffee you actually enjoy drinking.
Freshness matters.
Coffee starts losing aroma and flavor after it is roasted, which is one reason we roast our coffee in small batches after orders are placed.
The goal is simple:
Better coffee in the cup you already drink every morning.
Whether you prefer something smooth and familiar, flavored coffee, a darker roast, or a brighter cup, choose coffee you genuinely look forward to.
That little bit of anticipation matters.
When your coffee smells good while it is brewing and tastes good when you finally sit down with it, the routine starts feeling less like something you have to remember and more like something you want to come back to.
Give Yourself One Rule
Not ten.
One.
Maybe your rule is:
I do not check email until I finish my first cup.
Or:
I sit down for at least 10 minutes.
Or:
I do not start working while the coffee is brewing.
A single boundary is much easier to maintain than an elaborate morning schedule.
And over time, that one small habit can change the way the beginning of your day feels.
Your Morning Routine Does Not Have to Make You More Productive
This might be the most important part.
Not everything you do in the morning has to prepare you to produce more.
Your coffee does not need to become a strategy session.
Your quiet time does not need to become planning time.
You are allowed to enjoy something simply because it feels good.
For women who spend much of the day leading, deciding, helping, fixing, building, and responding, a few minutes without an agenda can be valuable on its own.
You do not have to earn those minutes by becoming more productive afterward.
Try This Tomorrow Morning
Keep it simple.
Make coffee you actually enjoy.
Before you open your email, social media, or work for the day, give yourself 10 minutes.
Sit down.
Take the first sip while it is still hot.
Notice how the coffee tastes.
Let your brain wake up before you hand it your entire to-do list.
That is it.
You can add more later if you want to.
But you may find that you do not need to.
A morning routine you can actually stick to is not about doing more before the day begins.
Sometimes it is about creating enough space to enjoy the beginning of it.
