The pause before the day starts running you

The pause before the day starts running you

Here’s what I’ve noticed about mornings. The moment your eyes open, your mind is already going. The list, the messages, the thing you forgot yesterday, the three things you have to handle before noon. You’re not even out of the bed yet and the day already has its hands on you.
And to be honest, I’m the same way. I’ve always been an early riser, and the second I’m up, my brain takes off. So I’m not telling you this from some calm place where I’ve got it all figured out. I’m right there in it with you.
But here’s the thing I want you to actually sit with for a second. Going from a dead sleep straight into full speed, every single day, with nothing in between, that is not a small thing. That’s you handing your whole morning over before you’ve even had the chance to be in it. And we do it to ourselves over and over, and then we wonder why we feel frayed by ten in the morning.
So here’s where most people get self-care wrong. They think it means adding something. A new routine, a longer morning, a whole list of things to do before the sun’s up. And then they don’t do any of it, because who has time for that. I sure don’t.
The move isn’t to add something new. The move is to take the thing you’re already doing and make it intentional.
You already make coffee. You’re already standing in that kitchen. Most mornings you make it and you drink it standing up, half answering a text, already three steps into the day. What if tomorrow you made the same cup, and you just sat down with it. Five, ten minutes. No phone. That’s the only change.
Same coffee. Same kitchen. Almost the same amount of time. But one of those is grab and go, and one of those is a moment that actually belongs to you. The difference isn’t the coffee. The difference is whether you let yourself be present for it.
And to be clear, I’m not talking about a whole production. I’m not asking you to journal for an hour or sit in silence like a monk. I’m talking about one pause. The transition between being asleep and being everything to everybody. You give yourself that, and you walk into the day instead of getting dragged into it.
Now why coffee, of all things. Because it’s already there. For me it goes deeper than that, I had my first cup at five years old, sitting at the table watching my grandfather drink his. So I never learned coffee as a grab-it-and-run thing. I learned it as something you sit with. Something peaceful. And that’s exactly what it can be for you, if you let it.
So here’s what I want from you this week. One morning, before you touch your phone, make your cup and sit down with it. That’s the whole assignment. Not forever. Just tomorrow. See how the day feels different when you start it as the woman who chose her morning, instead of the one whose morning got chosen for her.
You take care of everybody all day. You can take ten minutes first. We all got things going on. But if not now, then when.

Pause. Sip. Savor.
